At the end of April, AMI GE successfully started up the Push-Pull Pickle Line #2 for AHMSA (Altos Hornos de México S.A.) at Monclova, Coahuila, México.
The upgrade included the installation of new machinery for the entry section including a Tension Leveler (supplied by ADS), and the process tanks (supplied by Nelson Steel). This new equipment makes the pickle line capable of handling two coils at a time (One coil is processed while the other is prepared). Also, the control equipment of the entire line was changed (supplied by AMI GE).
AMI GE Needed scope of supply included the new motors and AC drives (TM-10 Drives) for the entry end section and process section, DC drives (TM-DC Drives) for the exit section, motor control centers, IO, operating stations and the main controllers of the line (Innovation Series Controller). For the pickle line upgrade, AMI GE also supplied the process automation for the entire line, engineering services, commissioning and project management in collaboration with JNE Automation.
With the revamp of the pickling line, AHMSA improved capacity of the line, and improved quality parameters of the cold rolled steel in terms of mechanical properties, thickness tolerance and high flatness, mainly through the new tension leveler.
The upgraded line can roll products ranging from 0.060” to 0.180” thick and from 24“ to 60” wide. The maximum coil weight is approximately 20 tons. With this upgrade the line will produce 490,000 tons/year of steel strip.
